Oh yes. My bad. But in my defence, the figures are so nice they distracted me away from the written word.

I can't say as I remember seeing the pig faced orcs, but I do remember the 'stir' they caused......"they're not proper orcs" was the cry. And who's to say the critics were wrong?

I think you said you played original 3 book D&D where the orcs didn’t have an illustration. The Monster Manual appeared in 1977 and orcs were pig faced though they stopped being so in later versions. The Minifigs D&D range was accurate in its portrayal of the Monster Manual creatures and some of the figures are lovely. Others less so...

Oh blimey. Who would have thought it. I had no idea that's where Minifigs' idea came from. The Monster Manual came out long after D&D had died out at the club.......or rather, I think there may have been some crossover but no one could afford the new stuff. We started getting figures for our characters, but the monsters we fought nearly always looked like a six sided dice........evil looking six sided dice......vicious.

were they yellow, unreadable with a 6 on 5 of the faces ?

You didn't keep your original D&D books did you ? The old original 3 book set is worth a packet now .

I have discovered, much to Henry's annoyance, that my little cube of GW dice (an impulse buy with which I am now very happy indeed), contains the means by which anything less than a five or six is impossible. The other numbers are there, but they never come up.

And for that reason, my little yellow dice (with the black dots - placed there after one too many, unfounded, allegations of cheating) have been retired. Although in the last game I played, given a choice, my little friend Dave chose those very same yellow dice over some plain and simple black and white dice. Cheating barsteward.

White box D & D came out 1974 & MM in 1977 or so. I always thought those early Minifigs Orcs were excellent figures, but those are the best painted ones that I've seen. I wonder if I can find mine? GW & Peter Jackson have a lot to do with the modern perception of orcs.


This is what they looked like in the 1977 animated version of LOTW, not a million miles from MF's interpretation.

The artwork in the Bakshi film was fantastic. Shame the series didn’t get finished. And of course the art was used in the wonderful SPI board game as well

Agreed, although the movie itself was probably best watched 'chemically enhanced' (not that I ever have!).

People's favourites (rules, figures, etc) often seem to stem from what they first encountered when younger. Probably for this reason my favourite orcs are early 80s Citadel figures. Same goes for dwarves and goblins.
