Anyone here know these well?

Someone I know is trying to track down a canadian soldier from a photo, we know he was in Normandy in the area of La Maladrie in June/July , was French Canadian and was a 1st lieutenant.

They think he was in the regiment De La Chardiere.

Any ideas where records might be.

As a Canadian who sometimes dabbles in family history research, I can only offer the preliminary clarification that you are probably looking for "Le Régiment de la Chaudière" (http://www.canadiansoldiers.com/regimen ... giment.htm), part of the 8th Infantry Brigade, 3rd Canadian Infantry Division, which came ashore in the first wave on Juno Beach, 6th June 1944. I cannot locate anywhere named 'La Maladrie' in Normandy, however there is a locality of "La Maladrerie" in Normandy, approximately 65kms southeast of Caen, and well east of the Falaise 'pocket', whose battle was fought in mid-late August 1944. I'm not aware of any image-searchable database of WWII-era Canadian military forces, sorry.

The time period is june/july during the fighting for Caen and the airfield.

This is the image of the man.



He left this behind in the camp behind the house the Frenchman inherited.

The Frenchman being the person trying to trace the soldier, to return to descendents or at least know his name.

With apologies for the delay, I've been round the houses with my Canadian military/genealogy contacts, and the consensus opinion is that the best "gateway" to start with, for your friend's circumstances is the Juno Beach Centre (https://www.junobeach.org/), a non-profit Second World War Museum located in Courseulles-sur-Mer, Normandy, France. You will note the site is completely bilingual (English/French), and there are a variety of staff identified in the "Contact Us" area at the very bottom, right-hand side of the home page referenced above. The JBC staff may suggest that your friend joins their Facebook Group (https://www.facebook.com/JunoBeachCentre) and posts a Message with his photo and a "Can You Help?" story describing his artifact and what information he is seeking, and is prepared to share. You never where it might lead . . .
