Looks excellent! I'm avoiding L.Romans quite well so far, despite nearly picking up the gripping beast plastics many times at shows. I kept my Saxons when I cleared out my Saga stuff so I may have some opposition should I weaken one day.

The game itself sounds ideal. Myself and Mr. Hall are big fans of keeping it simple and letting the narrative unfold. Rules are nothing more than tools to me. When we designed the Kumbahyah stuff I created an events card system to bring the game to life, create fog of war situations, various power ups and problems for each player to encounter randomly. Mission cards continually changed priorities and the whole thing always decends into glorious chaos fairly rapidly. Its helped by the enthusiasm of the players to add in their own contributions to the narrative too. The actual "rules" behind it are simple to the extreme and were born out of my Toy Soldier game rules, designed so kids could play. They've developed a bit as rules do the more you play but there is very little in the mechanics of what shoots and how. This free's the game up to flow much quicker and lets players just enjoy the story.

Tim, you're clearly on the money. The gaming part of the hobby is so dependant on the right spirit & the right pals.

Dark ages is something I have thought about, without producing even the beginnings of a set of rules. But, there is a point of departure with Arthurian warfare. You have to decide what you are trying to reproduce. Reality was probably pretty close to Bernard Cornwell, there are alternatives.

I’m happy with what I’ve achieved with Dux Brit. Fun games that look pleasing. Can’t really ask for more. I want to take that footprint to all my other periods now.

Wot Jeremy said, yep. It's why I like Infamy and Sharp Practice. Looks good on the table, and with congenial opponents - it's an awful lot of fun.

Right. Off to apply paint to some Arthurian Sub Roman British. :)

As the premier Dux B player on here, would you say the campaign rules are easily applicable to other periods - I'm thinking predominantly H&M/black powder?

I don’t think so. The core of Dux Brit is for the Saxon to become a Warlord and carve out a a little kingdom for himself. The Briton aspires to be King. I don’t think this easily translates to the black powder period.

For H&M I would use Dawns and Departures.

Yep. What Jeremy said. The core of the Dux campaign is acquiring prestige and loot to move up the ladder of titles and success.

Dawns and Departures is much less locked down.

I'm circling the drain on taking the plunge on some big battle Early Med. stuff. (Mainly due to this thread peaking my interest again) I don't think i'll ever get enough painted in 28mm for what I want to do, expanding the 15mm is a possibility but costly and almost as time consuming as painting my huge "stock" of 28's. So i'm considering 6mm but not sure i'll enjoy the final look :( If I go for 15's or 6mm it will be my reward to myself once I get at least one other project up to a gameable level :O

Paul: you'd agree that a "big" battle in the Dark Ages would have been a couple of hundred a side?

My B.B. pictured above has about 80 or so figures a side (say a 1:3-4 ratio). So a more do-able project even in 28mm than, say, Napoleon at Leipzig.
