No Flames of War or 40k for you then.....good man :D
Thats how they fought in the 41st Millenium. If you don't want to play games that are historically accurate then thats up to you i guess

What is it about ACW skirmish that you dont like so much ? i'm not a big ACW fan but isnt there lots of opportunity for raids etc in this period ?
I agree with EB. Yes there is loads of potential, but it feels too much like Napoleonics and not ACW at that level.

I have no idea. Unlike skirmishing with pike and wheel to wheel tanks where I can point at a specific issues, I can see no logical reason to shy away from small scale ACW. I just don't like it.

It seems that as tech gets better, large scale battles start to get a bit boardgamey. Phil Barker once wrote that the ideal wargaming scale is the largest area where the commander could see most of the battlefield. Hence his Wellingtonics at div - corps level and his WWII at coy-Bn level.

That's actually very sensible. I bet you've summarised it down from 4 pages of exceptions and codicils though.

I'll play anything. Myself and Hotel can make anything an effective skirmish game, same set of rules, just different looking figures with a different narrative.

I can see where you're all comming from though. Dark Age big battles don't feel right, were there even that many? Hastings, Stamford Bridge and such seem to have been big massive riots for all I've read, not much in the way of making tactical descisions but I'm no expert.

Also big battle WWII just seems too complex to effectively intergrate combined arms warfare into an interesting game. Though there is a board game that allows you to play the entire war, doesnt appeal though, not with miniatures.

I completely get EB's eyebrow raise at a pike skirmish too, perhaps that's what the pikemen were lamenting? I mean, a group of 12 pikemen giving a handfull of horse a bit of a prod seems wrong historically. But then if it works for Lion Rampant?
