Interesting place. Nothing like Adelaide. Redgum were right, city of churches and serial killers, founded by religious zealots. Humour and fun are not in character.
What Schumann et al failed to mention was that diagonally across from all those churches were well attended pubs. They're more or less right about the rest of it though.

Could have been worse, could have been Port Pirie.

I remember Whyalla before it became post industrial rust belt. I'm sure it's improved.
As for Port Pirie, can't think of a better place for a lead smelter.

Many years ago I went to a wedding in Port Pirie. My g/f father travelled with us in the Falcon, (obviously stopping off in Snowtown to check out the vault opposite the cop shop, as he was a NSW Police Area Commander).
So firstly, I have never seen so many developmentally handicapped kids as I did in Port Pirie, (it's the lead stupid!) - secondly, the appearance of me and him in suits brought the local supermarket to a halt, and the the pub we drank in afterwards down near the port area looked like it was still in 1941, complete with picked eggs on the counter, and blokes with stubby holders for longnecks made from tin. Every eye swivelled when we walked in, and they seemed to still be running an SP bookie out the back.
Mark down alongside Cann River and most of FNQ as 'not on the list' for pleasant retirement spot.
