Tonight I test played my Dux Britanniarum scenario for Virtual Lard this coming Saturday with two mates in South Africa (their WiFi is, on average, terrible - so if they could cope, chances are the rest of the world, except possibly for most of Scotland, can too). The British had to get the beer and supplies to the Tower and to stop the Saxons stealing it. The British decided the best way to do this would be to kill every Saxon they saw. Some insanely lucky dice rolls and solid tactics by the British allowed them to achieve this! A good fun game which leaves me really looking forward to this weekend.
The last picture shows how it’s done for those interested. A little knock off Go-Pro camera (courtesy of the missus - one she uses for horse riding) as the main table view and my iPhone as a ‘roving’ camera, all connected to Google Meet/Zoom (although you could use a laptop camera as the main table camera). The table view is the main view the players use, although they can ask for a close up of a part of the table or a unit and I use the roving camera for this, the players merely toggling between views as required.
Players roll dice and tell me where to move their troops. I draw the cards and show it to the mobile camera, asking the person it’s not meant for to look away from the screen. I ‘maintain’ the hand of each of the players and the individual players do too (either on paper or with their own decks if they have them). As I am running the game and not playing, I keep up ‘running commentary’ giving the players options as I see it. They can choose one or do something I haven’t suggested. I find this helps with the fact that they are not ‘there’ and thus have a different view of the table.
The system relies on honesty in the fact that I don’t check people’s dice rolls or if they are looking away when their opponents cards are drawn. My theory is if I cannot trust my fellow gamers then it’s all a bit pointless. It will never replace real face to face games, but a great alternative for Lockdown Gaming.
