November Ancients

Post by tim.w »

I could be in for Hail Caesaring?

Just counting up what I have and so far have the following Rebulican Romans:

X16 Numidian Foot
X6 Numidian Horse (will add another x6)
X2 Numidian Elephants

X12 Velites
X24 Hastati
X24 Principes
X24 Triarii

I could add more cavalry and a couple more of the legionary types but this will be maxing out my painting possibility between now and November. If that would do then I should be in. I'd have around 10-12 units in all.

Excellent !

Gary remind us what is a typical unit size ? (Frontage I guess...)

I can provided mostly hoplites and pikes. I base my hoplites 2 deep and my pikes 4 deep rather than the figure sales enhancing depths that warlord push :).

Standard units have a frontage of 150mm-200mm, so a 2 deep battle line would typically be 16-20 figures.

Pikes and warband should be 4 deep with the same frontage.

Skirmishers are small units so 6-8 figures. I put them on a 180mm frontage to cover a unit

Republican Roman cohorts are all small units so 12 figures. A legion has 2 6 man velites, 2 hastati, 2 principles and 1 triarii - that's a readymade division

Cavalry should be 2 deep but that looks stupid so a single rank, typically 6-8 figures

Elephants are single model units

Most artillery are single model, although Roman legionary ballistae are typically 2 to a unit

You need 1 commander per division (a division normally has a minimum of 4 non-skirmisher units) plus in HC2 you can gave an additional army general who can move from division to division to help out

If you guys can let me know what figures you have, I'm happy to come up with balanced forces and a scenario.

I'll have a look when I'm back from Anglesey, but it'll probably be a similar force to the one I used last time we played at Ayton

And the chances of me remembering what you have are zero, or worse. You forget that I'm due to get my pension in less than 6 months, so I'm verging on the senile
