That experiment with the road was my last foray into scenary (a couple of years ago). I did also note that the MDF warped a bit. I think roads and a good terrain mat really brighten up the wargames experience.

Pretty good tutorial actually.

I've tried making a section of road on a strip of MDF with PVA and woodland scenics stuff - same thing happended to me with the material not sticking and crumbling.
