I've seen a lot of modern depictions showing lapels, so that could be right. I know my level of intellectual rigour and I would always ask for a second opinion.

Just artists' mounting board (Dalerboard), stick 'em on with UHU glue, paint with thinned PVA, dip in Tesco play-sand, paint with Humbrol 29 Dark Earth, lightly brush with Humbrol 94 Sand and then paint patches with thin...
