Hail Caesar

Post by ochoin » Sun Aug 01, 2021 5:34 am

I've been looking to -possibly- change from Field of Glory to something else.

Any opinions on these rules?

I'm close to giving these a try Donald having read through them multiple times but have never started the intended game because something or other has popped up and stopped me - its usually been the preference to paint rather than game though

Looks like you'll be playing solo though with Brisvegas in lockdown

I haven't bought the rule book yet. Still thinking.
I've read some online reviews etc.

Basing doesn't seem to be a problem: we should be able to pretty well use our existing FoG set-up.
Do you need to buy those expensive supplements to get period-specific army lists (I'd need Bronze Age & Punic....& maybe Late Roman)?

HC seems to be less -legalistic?- than FoG. I think I want more fun in my Ancients gaming.

I am an 'E'-centiall worker, I'll have you know & will be at work on Monday, bright & early as per usual. Only half vaccinated (final shot in 10 days) but feeling fairly bullet-proof. Or, "so far, so good" as the parachutist with the faulty parachute was heard to say as he hurtled past the upper floors of a skyscraper.

As I've never played I'm not certain - I was going to suggest that you just buy the PDF version but even that's 20 squid!

I haven’t played them, but own a copy and have read them. Like all Warlord rule sets I’ll suspect they’ll be ok. Not great, not shit. They’ll provide a fun game if you don’t take it too seriously and play with the right opposition. Like any rules I guess

Yeah, they can be good fun and won't take hours to get into contact...if you don't fail your command roles.

What I really like is the way you need to use the specific national/army list rules...so you might need to have minimum of 50% of units as Light Infantry etc

Plus, it's definitely scalable, in that it's based on Divisions of troops...so you can just add more Divisions to your force 😀

I'm swinging more to DbX basing systems and have been eyeing up l'Art de la Guerre recently. Ancients will be my new focus after this year's Ancients and I'll be building armies for Lion Rampant and such skirmish type games plus DbA/variants.

I'm put off Hail Caesar by the size of armies you need and their compositions. I'd rather start small and add to it if I want.
