What's on your workbench?
Re: What's on your workbench?
Labourious perhaps, Ian. Or an indication I need to take some more dried frog pills.....

Re: What's on your workbench?
Thanks - #1 son is very switched on, tecchy-wise, so I may run the self-printing idea past him. Of course, I need him to actually print off one of each tank before I can measure the sizes. Hopefully before I pop my clogs......Spanner wrote: ↑Tue Feb 28, 2023 6:52 pm Baron- what I said to Fredd- send me quantities, heights and widths and I'll do the artwork and convert it to a raster format (unless you have CorelDraw or Illustrator?), but you'll need to get them printed or print them yourself. On the plus side you can use white inkjet decal paper and save some money by printing them yourself.

Yes, sons do tend to run on a different time scale to us. Just as well we weren't like that when we were young.Hopefully before I pop my clogs......

Re: What's on your workbench?
Excellent, yes a copy and then finding a printer would be good.
Didn't see the Guards one s in that corner and I can add Poles and Canucks to it.

Thanks for the kind words, lads. I'm basically doing the units that the three of us are building- I'm doing a company of 1GG, a half SQN of 2WG Cromwells and odds and sods from GAD for me. Between them Bill and Tim are covering the rest of WWII, or so it seems, and the decals are aimed at what they currently want. In answer to your posts:
Mark- I looked at the RA battery plates, but for the mo' the only artillery vehicles anyone wants are some tank destroyers, a couple of Crusader AA tanks and FOO vehicles. The Corps AC units and Anti-tank may happen- what was going to be one sheet has already grown into three. D COY/SQN markings are a possibility, though, if Tim expands his Recce REGT requirements.
Oh indeed, you wouldn't need to do much in the way of RA markings. As you say, OP tank and Carrier markings for Field Regiments, divisional AT Regiment markings, perhaps some divisional LAA Regiment markings and perhaps those corps AT Regiment markings. Crusader AA Mk II (twin 20mm) were in armoured regiments, anyway. Crusader AA Mk I (40mm) were in LoC AA Regiments and nowhere near the front line, so don't worry about those.
I was going to say not to bother doing D Sqn markings in anything other than white (for Armoured Car Regts), but I've just remembered that some Motor Battalions used that marking for their Support Coy, so you could do them in green as well.
And then there's the whole thorny subject of troop numbers, tank hull/turret numbers, callsign markings...

Re: What's on your workbench?
Oh by the way, for the WG Cromwells (if you're interested), they did the side markings VERY small and painted them on the hull stowage bins, with the full-size versions on hull front and rear. The markings usually contained either a letter A, B, C or D for Sqn HQ tanks or the Tp number (1-15). Most unusual.

Here's a WG Cromwell of 9 Tp, B Sqn:

Re: What's on your workbench?
Sorry, I didn't explain properly. I can scale up the images, not the whole A4 sheet. It's a 168% scale up, so the upscaled sheet would be A3 size. I don't know any decal printer that does A3 sheets. What I can do is like the attached (it's been scaled down to 30% size so the forum would accept it, so looks a bit ragged). You let me know what you want and we should be able to sort it, mate.FreddBloggs » 01 Mar 2023 23:19

My omission has been fixed.Didn't see the Guards one s in that corner and I can add Poles and Canucks to it.

Re: What's on your workbench?
Nice!
A few things though:
The '44' should have a white bar across the top to signify Corps Troops. If you're doing 2 HCR to go with the Guards Armoured Division they'll also need the VIII Corps sign (a charging knight in white on a red rectangle).
The 1st Polish Armoured Division sign was painted on a white rectangle when used as a vehicle marking. The sleeve badge didn't have the white rectangle.
For 7th Armoured Division you'd also need the 27th Armoured Brigade stag's head badge in combination with the AoS serial.
The '65' on black AoS serial seems to be a mistake. I think it should be '64' for the divisional MG Bn or Independent MG Coy.

Re: What's on your workbench?
I remember the information you gave me when I first stumbled down this path, mate. I still have the photos you gave me- including that 9 Troop, B Squadron tank. With the change to four troops per squadron you'd expect 9 Troop to be in C Squadron- but obviously not. But 11 and 12 Troop were definitely C Squadron, hence the decals. I think. And then there's the whole thorny subject of troop numbers, tank hull/turret numbers, callsign markings...
Probably.
Perhaps.
