A few years ago, my little group went into the ECW with a frenzy for a Show game. Lots of painted figures across 4 armies.
Since then, I think we've had one game.
I think this could be because of the rule set we use - Field of Glory:Renaissance. It's certainly serviceable but complex and rather dry. I'd really like to have the ECW figures out again as I really like them.
The last few nights, I've been contemplating possible replacement rule sets. Any suggestions are welcome.
However, one set of rules seems intriguing 'Pike & Shotte' by Warlord. I've read various reviews & watched two Youtube games. It seems to be what is required....with one or two issues.
Firstly, our ECW forces are based for FoG. We are not re-basing, adding figures to or, hopefully, taking away figures.
If both sides conform to the universal FoG 40mm wide bases, will this work?
The other issue is the making a P&S regiment of a pike element & two shoot elements, 3 separate units. I don't think I can abide this. Is there a "work around"?

Re: ECW....Pike & Shotte?
They look lovely, mate. I can't help with rules suggestions. The only rules I've played were Tercio and George Gush's WRG rules- which shows you how long I've resisted getting into yet another period.
If "The System" is the answer, who asked such a bloody stupid question?
Re: ECW....Pike & Shotte?
Interesting in that I didn't know they existed. However, I have previously looked long & hard at the "parent" rules - Mortem et Gloriam - as a possible replacement for our FoG: Ancients set.FreddBloggs wrote: ↑Thu Mar 30, 2023 11:45 am These might suit.

The M-E-G rules are a direct off-shoot of the Field of Glory rules that I find are a bit sterile. And my conclusion was they were but a slightly simpler version of a rule set I don't love. I expect the R-E-G rules will be the same.

Hello Donald,
I see that over on TMP you've just pooh-poohed the notion of using 'grids' (For King & Parliament rules). I too consider such abominations to be totally unacceptable............well, mostly......
But (keep this to yourself), but I think the ancients version of K&P works really well for a big game played out in a few hours. After a couple of moves you'll forget about the grid thing. I've also played an astonishingly splendid 'grid' FPW game that our very own World2Dave created.
So, don't dismiss so quickly the possibility that K&P will suit your needs. But don't, whatever to you, tell anyone I said so.

Iain, as you know I value your opinion highly. Please don't spread that as it may lower my prestige here at LAWS.
I think I'm more of a wargamer than a collector or painter (!!). However, the spectacle of the game means a lot to me. Having never played American football, I've personally never been in a real environment that is gridded. The idea is an abomination.
So, thanks for wise words but I am just not wise enough to accept them.

If you are not averse to card driven games the free set Victory Without Quarter give a good game. I wrote my own set which our group think give a good game but which being honest have had a mixed reaction beyond, A Crowning Mercy, still available from Caliver Books I think.
There is no point in being stupid if you don't show it!

You 'not wise'? Tish and piffle.
So you are resolved. I entirely appreciate and understand your point of view. Let's just keep this exchange between ourselves then.
Keep well......see you soon perhaps.

Good call. I forgot about those rules (and others).Penda wrote: ↑Sun Apr 02, 2023 12:41 pm If you are not averse to card driven games the free set Victory Without Quarter give a good game. I've played VWQ and they were OK. I seem to recall that there were a few gaps (as you would expect from a thirteen page set of rules), but nothing that Donald and his chums couldn't cope with.
Donald, I'll email you my copy of VWQ (which I downloaded some years ago - I don't know if they've since been updated, but I don't think so). And I've got a PDF entitled "VWQ meets Command and Colours" which I'll include - but I have no idea where it came from.
I'll also send you a free PDF of a set of rules by Howard Whitehouse designed for big battles. No idea what they're like.

Re: ECW....Pike & Shotte?
As it so works out, I've been reading the VWQ rules & various other related items - including a blog where the poor soul ventured to Wales & played John two ECW games.
I thank you for your 'sendings' & will read with great interest.
I'll be in London in July- briefly. We pick up the girl &, as usual, take her to where she wants to go & pay for the privilege.
Lofoten Islands, I believe. Later we head south for Sicilia & Abruzzo to visit with Anna's folks.
