Question for 6mm Experts/Maniacs...

While one approach is to use this scale for grand tactical refights, I'm thinking of something somewhat different: A division level game with each stand representing a company at a relatively low Figure:Soldier ratio.

If I, for example, went with the SYW, as I have already, I'd like to model each BN at company level integrity. Four ranks v three ranks per differing doctrine, etc. and accounting for variations in frontage with the idea of making the basing footprint (frontage at least) of each unit as close to its real world equivalent as possible. Complete with NCOs at intervals behind or ahead of the formation, appropriate internal spacing, etc. This somewhat complicates basing, though I've sketched up some some ideas for how I think it would come together.

At the end of the day, I plan to create a Bruce Weigle type table (See below). I'm really taken by the way these come together visually.

So, for the collective: Potential challenges, stuff I maybe haven't thought out, or other counsel from the Ministry Of Micromodelling?

Get chandlers art of war in thd age of marlborough, it has all the frontage and deployment info, then just scale it foe the bases you want to use.

The biggest challenge I always had was just painting the little buggers. And my Chilean war of Independence only had a couple of brigades on the table. I reckon one of my 72 fig battalions took about as long as 12 25mm figs.

Reduced footprint buildings are your friend. The Total Battle Miniatures range for the hundred days are scaled like that and give a much better impression of villages etc... than other ranges.

If you are doing a div level game then I would suggest that your smallest unit is the btn (ie: 2 levels down). I think bases with a large footprint look impressive in this scale and you can model each base with a formation to represent different doctrines. I would keep the factors for the diffent doctrines as a function of the rules rather than the base sizes/frontage.

Exactly my thinking. BNs modeled with company integrity and based as you describe. Similar with the cavalry.

2mm 3D printed is what you want...

2mm/3mm is great but you get much better visual impact with 6mm whilst still keeping the big battalion feel. I've got both but my 3mm were meant as companions to 1/1200 naval (just a little over scale )
