I'd take a guess at highlanders, tying up the kilt wasn't unheard of.

It's not the kilt that was tied up. The plaid was removed and the long shirt underneath was tied up like some sort of weird 'nappy' (and to stop thistle rash).

Yep.... the “lang Leine”.
Basically a big girl’s nightie with two pronounced pointed ‘tails’ at the front of the hemline.
The whole hemline was folded up, and fastened with a belt or cord - giving the appearance of a short kilt - and the pointed ‘shirt-tail’ bits hang down over said belt like bunny ears.

In the medieval era it would be dyed with saffron. They looked like hairy Hare Krishnas.
The hoi polloi would approximate the saffron effect as best they could with the natural dyes they had to hand. That’s right. Pish. Dorty wee monkeys.

It all continued beyond the medieval period in colour and use. Right up to the '45 the full plaid was generally discarded before battle and the men wore just the shirt...or less to fight! (Even poor highlanders had a dozen or so ways of getting a yellow dye, just one had the more 'piquant' element and the term 'saffron' probably refers to the colour rather than the actual use of the 'spice' as a dye).

True enough, but they did use stale urine (“Glaith” in traditional Scots dyeing) as a mordant, and I’ve never been one to let the finer points of fabric crafting get in the way of a good racial slur.
