Battery commanders

Post by ochoin »

For my Napoleonic gaming (using the 'General d'Armee rules), I field batteries of artillery where each model gun, separately based, represents 2 real guns. Each model is typically served by 4 gunners. Partly because most sets provide some sort of officer figure to command the battery & because unpainted figures are anathema to me, I've always added a single figure as the battery commander.

These figures , based on a separate circular base, currently have no function in the game. Any suggestions to give them a gaming purpose?

Some sort of status marker perhaps?

Order or disorder? Ammo supply? Limbered or unlimbered? Centre of burst circle?

Flick them around like Subuteo players if things get a bit slow?

Thank you for that cornucopia of ideas. And my wargames are never slow but always replete with action, drama and elements of the Human Comedy.

Seriously Donald the only use I can think of is as an ADC when you give the battery and Artillery Assault Order
I just use counters instead of ADC for this phase , blue for French and their allies, red for all other nations

Now colour coded dice throwing on the other hand..
Blue or French, Red for British, white for Spanish, Green for Russians..
For some reason I like using yellow dice for Austrians
Maybe because they seem to run away

Hmm Must buy some black dice for the Pwrussians

But why use counters when you can have a nicely painted figure? Better still, a vignette: the battery commander consulting a colleague over a table filled with range charts, possibly holding a little tape measure?
I get lockdown, but I get up again.

How about little models of the Duracell Bunny? See if anyone gets it.....

I hear what you're saying, Donald, but you've never played a game against Andy.
