Book 8 The Campaigns of Napoleon by David Chandler. First published in 1962 and still the best single volume on the subject.

All my early historical reading as a teen was Chandler and Haythornthwaite
I remember raiding Hay-on-Wye when you could get big hardbacks second hand for £2 and coming home with an absolute stack full.

Same here, I don't think I ever came away from Hay without less than 20 books!

Ahhhh I used to come away from Hay with 3 or 4 books only. But then everytime I went I took up to a hundred with me to sell. Neighbour did scaffolding and had a house to reroof, found boxes of US editions of sci fi stuff and gave them to me as he knew I read. 90% of it was stuff that never had a uk publication, so I sold on the dross.

Hay was a net profit day for me then, even after grabbing books.

My mother used to live close to Hay so I was a regular visitor. I got some great bargains however I did notice that with the advent of the internet and abebooks prices went up.
