How far do you guys highlight black up?
I’ve got some black lapel faced Grenadiers and I’m not sure how light to go without it looking to grey but equally it needs to pop against Dark Prussian Blue

Either dark green or dark purple over the black. I don’t like using grey.

I just tend to go to mid-dark grey, but where people do it well (e.g. Olicanalad's and Chasseur's blogs) they go up to a much lighter grey and it still works.

I tend to go for quite low contrast - I think I might use German grey which is a dark grey.

I you want it to show up vs the Prussian blue you could always emphasise it the other way round as well by lightening the blue where it adjoins the black ?

That’s the route I’ve taken so far GM but maybe I’ll add another grey highlight to the lapel edges as that blue coat is lushhhhhhh
I like my Prussian coats real dark, despite the only real one I’ve seen in the flesh (other than Frederick's ) being surprising bright. Let’s not get in any blue debates though

I like to do mine dark grey with black washes, more or fewer depending on how dark I want it, and whether they are officers' clothing or ORs'.

It could be worth an experiment with GW's black contrast paint over a medium grey

I've done something similar to this -- used the CP black over a light glaze of the CP grey. From there you can also add some selective filers, like green or purple.

Using conventional paint, I tend to get good results with the Andrea Paints black series.
