Superior vs Inferior basing

One of the things on basing I have realised, is that whenever I have read up on battles, units spread or closed to cover the ground needed. None of this wargames, 1mm overlap so I get a bonus.

I cant recall if I mentioned it or not but Paul pointed me in this direction for basing (3,2,1) .....you dont have to use round bases.

Fred, one could argue that the element spreads out, but the other side are getting a bonus because the spread out unit doesn't fight as well as if it hadn't spread out.

The only thing I might suggest is putting the superior on 20mm rounds and the inferior on 25mm rounds. But keep the basing uniform for both. You can always keep the sabot the same width for both, some will just be more tightly packed than others

The Gateway cavalry are sulking in the darkest depths of their barracks and refusing to come out.........so, currently, they are unbeatable.

How about using the reverse numbers method, whereby you need fewer better troops?
So, Poor are in say, 18s, Average in 12s, Good in 9s, or similar?

This might help give the impression that big mobs of crap are needed to fight smaller units of quality troops.
I think Phil Sabin used this method in his ancient battles book/rules. It also reflects the Dragon Rampant strength points approach, which ties in a bit with the family of rules you're using.

Quality troops have lots of big flags. Crappy troops have fewer big flags?

quality troops have square bases to show how well drilled they are. Lesser, somewhat slouchy fellows have lots of curves
