True, but you can't discard the leadership of Pip Roberts.
He spent 6 months under Hobart's command before taking command of 11AD. I suspect that Hobo had a fair bit of say in that inspired decision.

Absolutely. He was the man for the hour and, like Alanbrooke, it was a shame he didn't get a combat job. He could have setup the funnies and given the parcelling out to an engineer.

I'm reminded of Patton's quote about dying for your country. And that the Colonel of the 2nd Argyll and Sutherland was considered mad for doing such intensive training, but his battalion was considered the best of the British battalions in the campaign.

Hobart was a great Tank commander and his baby 11th Armoured, once Roberts was allowed to use it as he and Hobart intended, the best Armoured Division in Europe.
