Hmm.. would that be for Kenneth then Jer? I too have acquired about 5 groups of Carthaginian spearman, plenty of Numidian skirmishing infantry and LH, some Spanish Caetrati, and a pile of mercenary Greek Hoplites.

Well, we started the Pointy Sticks project on here before Rich found Kenneth. They’ll do double duty for that and probably TTS. I’m going to be starting 24 Libyan Spearmen in a couple of days and then it’s 24 Scutarii, 16 Caetrati, some Spanish and Numidian cavalry and then some more Celts. Then I’m done. Aside from a small Roman force.

Is TTS the one played on a gridded board? I've always used WRG then DBx (now DBMM2) for large battle ancients. Locally, there's not much interest in ancients. Off to have a look at your painting thread now.

Yes, it’s the gridded one. I cannot stand DBM and DBMM - tried them all. They’re too abstract for me

and gridded isn't abstract? 8-)

Horses for courses, and everyone has different views on what can be abstracted.

With historical opponents, especially on large multi player games, DBMM worked really well for us in Canberra. But the rules are a PITA unless you play regularly, and you absolutely have to accept you are a general and not a captain with local influence on tactics and timing.

I also dislike intensely the warhammer style of claiming to be big battle, but at the same time giving archers a range that means that the ground scale for a group is for 20 men. Fine if you have an 8 metre table.

If it's big battle you either need days to play and an enormous table, or accept some abstractions. I don't think there are too many Napoleonic games that claim to let you be both Captain and Marshall. Which abstractions you choose are up to you.

And I've looked at TTS and MeG but they just didn't inspire.

Yes. Only that people I know and trust in SA claim it’s not great. Unless you like DBM....

ADLG is a development and simplification heavily based on DBM. It's very popular, and the rules are nicely laid out and easy to use, but it's more luck-driven than DBM.
