I’ve been assuming that my WAB based project will work with it. I’d be happy to give it a go.

Yeah, me too. Unlike Purps, I don’t really have a problem with any WG rules. They’re not the best, but they’re certainly not the worst....

They are adequate, but in many ways very old skool. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but I've moved on from 'Chainmail'.

Yeah, for me games are more about the people I play than the rules I play? Rules are really a mechanism to allow me to get figures on a table and have a grand time with my mates.

Grids don’t make a game abstract. Telling me to call my Romans ‘blades’ or my Vikings ‘blades’, when really they fought completely differently. That makes it abstract for me.

My ancients is distinctly old school because that’s a cool thing to be and which is why I’m going with WAB but I could manage a bit of hail Caesar too. I assume like BP it’s basing neutral.

I do like TSS a lot and the grid doesn’t bother me. In fact I think it’s perfect for ancients because of the way it limits manoeuvre. It’s my chosen set for proper big battle.

Tru dat. You've said something very insightful and sensible there. Go and lie down or drink more beer, that should fix it.

Yes Simon, HC just has 'small', 'standard' and 'large' units. There's some suggested numbers per unit but it really doesn't matter. It looks a bit better if your hoplites and phalangites are 3 or 4 deep rather than 2, but that doesn't really matter either. Personally I think it's a significantly better set of rules than BP, although I'm sure Purps will comment that that's not saying much, but you have to be ok with the basic command and control mechanics if you are going to have any chance of getting on with the rules.
Why us? Cos we're 'ere lad, nobody else.

so firstly - yes.. it's who you game with, not the rules that makes the difference. Well said Jeremy.

But I am completely over sets of rules that have nothing more than a passing nod to issues of command and control or morale.
