Battle of Arcis, 1814
Battle of Arcis, 1814
I'm thinking of wargaming some 1813-1814 battles in the future.
I'd like to start with Arcis. It has Napoleon outnumbered but using the Guard, which gives these troops a much needed trot on the table. The second day of the battle has a clear purpose - escape or be trapped.
Does anyone have any wargaming information on the battle? A clear map? Cut down OOBs? Victory conditions etc.

I have the Nafziger and Hourtoulle books on the 1814 campaign. Both have a simple map. Nafziger only has high level OOBs of the battle but does have some breakdown of some formations a few weeks before the battle.

That's the great thing about this site - we're all very experienced plagiarists.

How was the Guard in 1814? Still Guardish or a bit more like Lineish?
Re: Battle of Arcis, 1814
Good question. Given how little the Guard was used prior to 1813/1814, it's hard to be definitive. Napoleon tended to put nearly any likely lad into the Guard at this stage, but they fought surprisingly well.
In the Campaign of France, they won battles & performed prodigies. Nap. himself, was in good form and I think if the French had the numbers, they'd have flogged the allies.
It's wonderful how defending your own country focusses the mind. Ask the present day Ukrainians.
