Speed Painted Late Romans

In a few weeks I will be entering The Analogue Hobbies Painting challenge with a Thematic Byzantine army that I'm putting together. Before the event, I thought it prudent to slay the demons of the Varnishing Disaster nightmare which stopped me in my tracks in last year's challenge after prepping hundreds of Late Roman miniatures!

I'm not really happy with the painting style on these miniatures so will be selling them. Not yet as I have another 8 of the Late Roman Celtae Seniores Auxillia Palatinum (Infantry) to complete first. Unfortunately there will be no more cavalry models as the first six were ruined by the varnish from last year.

They will be appearing in the Bazaar for sale when the last eight miniatures are complete.

Thanks. Yeah, I've been prepping Thematic Byzantines of late for the AHPC. Can't wait to get painting at a normal speed!

I was going to do the Late Roman's but after doing a test run on speed painting with the above LR, I decided that I ought to just take my time with the brush and do another project.

Is there historical evidence for the spear-shaft paint scheme (I hope so as I want to use something similar on my SAGA Normans)?

I'm not aure mate. I took the idea from a number of Late Roman reenactor groups on the net so I'm going on their interpretation. As for direct evidence, I don't think we will ever know one way or the other. Even one of the main sources we have, Vegetius, had his obvious prejudice (looking back way too fondly at a long gone age/different era IMHO).
