I've spent some time looking at the suggestions. Fred's 'old school' suggestion is more or less unobtainable. IABSM seems to be a bit half-baked. I'm wondering about 'Battle Group Kursk'? Is it only for the Eastern Front? Could I use it for Western Europe & the Western Desert but use the BKC army lists?

As I understand it, although there are common core rules, you need the supplements for each campaign.

I've not found the quality of the History of Wargaming reprints to be very good.
Blurry print on blotting paperesque pages, and the covers curled rapidly for no good reason.
It was probably over five years ago when I purchased a couple of Featherstone books though so they might have upped the quality since then?

I admit, I have the original book, and the rules with just an odd tweak stand up well.

I have half a dozen or so and they aren't up to the standards of Black Powder or Flames of War but they are very cheap for a very niche publication. I have reprints of late victorian theological books which probably have the same kind of readership but which cost £50-£100 for a similar quality. The photos are, on the whole, terrible but the text is all there and clear as a bell.

The Featherstone Campaign book I have is not great, the print is blurry and and in places too close to the binding, like I say things may have changed but it's put me off of buying any more

I went against my principles and bought his printing of the Charlie Wesencraft AWI book, only because it had never been published. He managed to get his own web site address wrong in the back cover. I would always prefer an original edition - I’m lucky in having most of the titles I would want - and it goes against the grain to see things described as e.g. Don Featherstone’s Naval Wargaming by John Curry.

Also when I put out all the Georland stuff he put something about George Keef on his blog which contained two or three inaccuracies. I don’t know the bloke and have only been in touch with him a few times, but personally I would treat his stuff carefully and as I say always prefer the original where possible.

Having said that he has put a tremendous amount of work into a project which has potentially benefited loads of people by providing much easier access to some texts and ideas. And I’m not remotely qualified to know about his work on modern professional Wargaming.

Be interested in your assessment of this - I have Don Featherstone's AWI "handbook" (which, to be honest, is showing its age and was never exactly cutting edge in terms of research, but was interesting nonetheless).

I have been looking to get some of my old ww2 kit out. Being an old schooler I have been looking at Charles Grant Battle. My book is a bit battered but you can get a download of tweaked versions from here:-
