In my version of history there could well be native light horse........very much as Grizzles describes.

Well, various Africans living in South Africa embraced the horse & notably one unit of the Natal Native Horse were from the Basutho tribe. They did very well in the AZW & were warmly regarded.

I've read that many powerful Zulus owned horses which were a bit of a status symbol. I've also read (can't confirm it) that mounted scouts were used at times.

IT took the Apache and the Mapuche a few generations to become really proficient horsemen. Dunno why the Zulu didn't adopt it from the Borer, but by the time British light cavalry turned up there wasn't much time to learn.
