What was the point of the sky fuselage band?

The band was for recognition purposes, avoiding friendly fire. The Axis used a white band for the same purpose in North Africa.

Always wondered since I painted it on an Airfix Spit IX.

Sadly, our Christmas game will not be TOTS, our club plays its december games in 1:200 scale, or TOTS*1.5. But when I do get TOTS up to angels 15, I shall be paling the schwarzgrun a little. Might skip the masking too, I nearly lost a finger for the furher.

Your Heinkel problem was caused by painting the dark colour first. With Humbrol always paint dark over light (and ALWAYS use matt white undercoat).
Defiants didn't have the same variety of camo as Hurricanes as they all came from the same factory (unlike Hurricanes).

Schwarzgrn is actually paler than dunkelgrun, and I painted it over a white undycoat. When I paint my COTOTS huns, I'll lighten up the Schwartzgrun a bit

I never undercoat my aircraft, although I always paint the lighter colour first and then over paint with the darker colour.

Indeed the pattern variation applied to the aircraft that were produced in large numbers, the Hurricane & Spifire. Luckily we didn't make too many Defiants or Battles.

I always wondered what the defiant would have been like with no turret and an 8 gun in the wing battery.

A Hurricane.
