Re: Hail Caesar
I've played WotR using Hail Caesar, and I have to say that, compared to the steaming pile of ordure that is Black Powder, it seemed a lot more period-sensible/sensitive and enjoyable.

I'm finding FoG (our Ancients' rule set) a bit tedious.
I did some work on MeG & introduced it & suggested we give it a go & met a lot of indifference.
I've now tried to sell HC and the cavills raised makes me think I'm stuck with FoG......no bad thing, I guess. Inertia is unbeatable.

I thought they were playing AdlG in Brisvegas?
I actually had my first game of Black Powder tonight (WSS) and didn't hate it, even if it did seem hugely dice driven, the moves designed for 8m tables, and written with loopholes a mile wide.

Re: Hail Caesar
The issue with all Warlord rules is the main rules are deliberately generic. You then need to invest in the individual theatre books, Napoleonics alone has several (Peninsula, Russia, etc) and those add the period flavor and special rules. HC is the same.
BP are not bad, they’re not great. I’ve had some cracking games with them, but I’ve been playing with mates and the rules wouldn’t have mattered anyway. It does strike me that there is a division, if you love the DBX mechanism and it’s later evolutions (FoG et al) you probably won’t enjoy any of the Warlord stable as they are the polar opposite.
What they are fantastic at is getting new people into the hobby, and in my opinion that forgives many sins. What I can never understand is the drama queen antics of people criticizing rules. If you don’t like them, move on. No need for a song and dance at every opportunity.

Re: Hail Caesar
This. In my defence, my first experience of BP was the wargaming equivalent of being bitten by a small dog (see posts passim, as they say in Private Eye) - first turn, my opponent did a triple move, landed right in front of me and blasted both my brigades off the field. Game over without the chance of even returning fire. Spent the rest of the day shopping (it was the first Partizan at the new venue).

I love DBx and also enjoy BP. Am I an enigma ?
Re: Hail Caesar
Some might term that the friction of war. Your commander couldn’t get out of bed and had a leadership style where his sub commanders may not be allowed to act on their own.BaronVonWreckedoften wrote: ↑Wed Aug 04, 2021 9:22 amThis. No different I guess to in CoC where the Panzer Grenadier player gets a triple turn and mows you down with 9 MG42’s.
It’s an aberration and will probably never happen again. Write a suitably funny narrative and play again.
Re: Hail Caesar
Yes. But not for those reasons.
Re: Hail Caesar
Can I put in a word for Neil Thomas' Ancient and Medieval Wargames rules? Very flexible and easily copes with much larger games than his standard 8 units. Always gives us a good game.
There is no point in being stupid if you don't show it!
