Surely it depends on the ground scale of the game being played? Sand dunes are huge. They’d probably take up the entire table

Unless it’s rocky outcrops you’re wanting - so assume dunes are the default, limiting sight and movement and the rocky ground breaks it up

Lawrence crossed Duney bits to get to Aqabar, and the LRDG did as well.

And add in heat haze and wind, visibility is 'variable'.

Not most of the ones I crossed in Dubai. As I wrote- it was a revelation.

Yeah, people crossed them.
They didn't fight on them.
There is nothing there to attack.
They are not effectively defensible.

Anybody gaming 'trip to Aqabar' needs dunes.
Nobody gaming 'Battle of Aqabar' needs dunes.
