That's an athletics track. Not sure it is the cricket ground.

Did the cricket ground originally host chariot racing.....?
It could have been a greyhound track, although I can't find a mention of that online. The 'Gabba in Brisbane had one around the perimeter for many years.

EDIT it is a Greyhound track, the White City Stadium https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_Cit ... anchester)

I was wondering if it was Old Trafford or not - it's quite close to the Man Utd ground, which is correct geographically (when a very young George Best turned up for his MUFC final trial, the taxi driver took him to the cricket ground by mistake!). However, they shifted the orientation of the "square" by 90 degrees a few years ago, so the main pavilion is at one end instead of being at mid-wicket as it always used to be; also the shape of the playing area has changed. Plus they've erected hotels, hospitality suites and what-have-you in the former open-air crowd spaces.

it's horrible, all the atmosphere has gone.

The square moving was due to evening low sun getting in the players eyes from one end, which used to cause a 15 minute break.

One of the giveaways it isn't the cricket ground is the lack of the train station at the Kirkstall Lane end, now a tram stop, which was right by the ground.

The cricket ground is just out of shot to the bottom of the ww2 picture.
