So I have worked on a second unit and decided that I need to change my thoughts on basing and gone for a 80 by 40mm base with 9 figures.
The slight stagger I think adds a feeling of movement to the base and with an officer in front makes it look more than a thin line.

agreed. Plus it gives more visibility of the painted sides of the figures

I like the way the clever painting combined with the basing stagger fools the eye into thinking the figures are 3D. Very impressed!

Very nice!
Interesting that you have changed your basing to about the same size as my VnB based units which have 8 Spencer Smiths (demi-ronde) in two ranks; my depth is around 42mm to accommodate the figure bases.

I have completed my latest unit of Zinners - they are the 4th Puttkamer Hussars.
Cavalry will be mounted five figures on a 80 by 50mm base and will represent a 5 squadron regiment.
Next up will be a tidy up of a previously painted unit of Prussians - the 17/24 Grenadiers and completion of 3 extra figures for the Erbprinz.
