Another vote for Lion Rampant, it's affordable and self contained. Saga has a few drawbacks for me, the individual Age Of books aren't cheap, you do feel some pressure to buy the faction specific dice and it is important to understand your opponent's battle board as well as you understand your own.
If LR feels too generic I would recommend a look at Fantastic Battles. Despite the name it has a lot of sample historical lists, scale doesn't matter as everything depends on base size. You can use the traits to build things like an infantry block with long spears and mixed shooting which would take you up to Pike & Shot quite easily.

Some excellent suggestions there chaps, which I will ponder and eventually act upon.

Alas suddenly my life has just got a little more complex... which is the inevitable consequence of being an only child with elderly parents.

But once that situation has resolved itself (which hopefully isn't too serious) I'll get buying some rules.

I do have Midguard, which is the new Lardies Ancients/ Fantasy set which looks interesting.

It must be that time of life, there are a few of us in similar situations right now!
I thought of suggesting Midgard but wondered if it might be a little bit too complex and "different" to attract new gamers?
