To be fair it's pretty consistent at 15-20mm frontage for close order foot in two ranks and effectively the same for light types but only in one rank.
Cavalry seem to be mostly 20mm frontage for regulars.

I'm presuming EB is looking to work out ranges based on an average ground scale.
I'd look at the smallest unit sizes as people rarely mind spliting and combining the units in their collections but don't like painting extras (plus i'm aware my cavalry units are quite big )
