Not only short stumpy legs but 4mm thick bases! The League will be almost exclusively Minifigs, so they'll be quite a bit smaller than the Gateway chaps. Should work OK though.

Perhaps not surprisingly, I've not really thought about the cavalry arm. I did get the gee gees out to count them but I didn't notice the fat arse. I'm mostly going to be using the WSS range, because I inherited hundreds of them, which I believe are those currently in production.

GaryP - In terms of the 25mm Minifigs ranges, the current horses are the ones that superceded the old 'S' range. The reason that they have acquired the reputation of having "fat arses" is because they were the first Minifigs horses cast with the saddle on the horse, rather than on the rider (which was the case with the 'S' range), and in order to achieve a good "fit" for the rider, the horse's body curved inwards from just behind the pistol holsters, to just behind the portmanteau, giving an "hour glass" shape when viewed from above. In scale/size terms, the arse of the typical Minifigs 25mm horse is no bigger than it should be, it is just exaggerated by the artificially thin saddle area.

Fantastic looking Unit. This could be a really great army with a lot of potential for interesting alliances and foes.

Did I say that I bought the figures with the original bayonets (about sixteen) and most of the command group when I was 15? That's 1974 or 75. They're older than many of the chaps on the forum!
