Tim, if you’re painting black washed figures with a dark CP, I’d give them a dry brushing with white/off white (edited to add: BEFORE applying the CP, that is) so that they’ve got some highlighting that’ll ‘show’ through the paint.
Thanks, yes they're not black washed, just brown washed but I still need to highlight the highlighting before I'd use a fancy GW paint.
I was thinkng black wash over brown wash might work too?

I’ve tried a thin black wash over a buff undercoat.
On deeply recessed miniatures, it’s not necessary - getting into the recesses and shading them is what CP does best.
On lightly detailed miniatures - older sculpts, smaller scales etc, it does add to the shading effect somewhat.

I saw some great Brunswickers once that had been highlighted with dark grey
I always paint black with a mid-dark grey followed by a black wash, so contrast might mean I can eliminate the grey stage!

I did a little more work on my g/s as I try to figure out how to use this stuff satisfactorily. On the sword I painted a very white metal and glazed it with the CP Basilicanuspenetratus Grey. Thinking that will work well for shading armo(u)r for the most part. Also, I've taken to painting one section of the carapace at a time to manage the coffee staining and prevent streaking. Should have been obvious the first time around, tho many of the demo videos show guys just slapping the paint on - I wasn't totally happy with the results from that method of application.

Thats very timely HMS - i was going to give these paints a try on exactly the same figures! Looking good so far - would be grateful if you could post further progress pics

Be happy to - hopefully I'll improve on this last a bit.
If anyone comes across a good tutorial, that goes beyond the GW convention sales pitch, please share.

I have been painting 6mm with them, so far, they are quick to use as they run into detail so less faffing. Start with lightest first. They work best on detailed models rather than plain ones, and load the brush rather than try and dab it. Will get some pics up later.

Very nice HMSP. I’m not having too much luck with mine, redone a few, but this might be as much to do with the fact that they are the first figures I’ve painted since September and I seem to need to relearn painting!

I'll stick with my artists oils/turpentine wash thanks. About 100 times chaeper than GW.

Ordered some from Element Games, but after two weeks they still haven’t arrived. So I’ve cancelled the order, the cost outweighs the benefits in my eyes
