Turns out the alchemists among us already knew about the technique and had cheap-as-chips homebrew formulae down pat.
It was the same with ‘magic dip’.

6mm Rapier Miniatures Indian Swordsmen painted in contrast paints, (except the metallic bit and the standard). Very happy with them and they were quick to do.

The paints work like a watercolour wash or turps wash rather than dip or inks, the difference is small but noticeable, not least that I find they run and streak less than the other options. For an out of the bottle solution I think they work very well. next up is more Indians and then some acws, again 6mm ones.

There's a bit of a difference between the Contrasts and 'Magic Wash'.

Left is a figure with a straight Contrast Black, on the right, figure with Magic Wash (1 part Clear floor polish, 4 parts water, smidgen of black to taste). I tend to use Magic Wash as the last coat before varnish, I'm not sure how I'll use the Contrast Black, possibly over a darkish Grey to save doing the 6 stage Andrea option.

Having looked closely at those two figures now they've dried, it's interesting that the Contract hasn't filled in the deep folds in the same way that the magnetic tendencies of the magic wash always do. Cheap DIY for the win!

On the plus side, I think I've decided on Plaguebearer Green (on the left) rather than Orc Green for my Orcs, one coat seems to work fine.

No, it is a light to dark process, as I said earlier, like using watercolours. Layers of the same paint make it darker. Black works well over white or grey undercoats though.
