Gentlemen,

I said I wouldn't do anything with the VBCW campaign until after Ayton 2018. Well, now it is 'after Ayton' and here I am.

There have been lots of very helpful suggestions for the format of the campaign, the scenarios and on the best rules to use, for which I'm very grateful. The breakfast and evening discussions over this weekend have further crystallised what people want from the VBCW weekend and brought forth yet more suggestions for rules (Men Who Would Be Kings - very possibly an inspired idea).

So, in the privacy of my hotel room, and before I went to the pub on Sunday evening, I cogitated at length on my opening comment for the forum. The result is a long way from what I expected to be saying.

I'm dropping out of organising the Ayton 2019 AVBCW campaign.

I'm not confident that I'm the man for the job and it's best to say now when there's plenty of time to make alternative arrangements. I fear that my image of the Ayton VBCW thing falls way short of what others expect. Under normal circumstances it wouldn't bother me to fight my corner against overwhelming odds but, on this occasion and exceptionally(?), I think the unavoidable truth is that I don't have the first idea about what I'm doing or talking about.

I have some great maps of the Ayton area of 1928 (supplied by Bob's wife) and there's all the stuff and comments earlier on this thread. If I can be of any assistance to the new incumbent etc, etc.....

So, on that bombshell.......

I'm not surprised but it's a real shame as I think you could have made a great job of it, especially with your attention to detail!
I don't believe that it really matters if your vision is not what you think others might want as you are more than capable of treading the middle ground which keeps everyone happy.
Does this mean you'll still play VBCW or are you intending something else?

You're very kind, Paul (and you Jezza), but no, I won't be taking part. It was the campaign thing that tickled my fancy and I'm certainly not painting any of those silly 28mm giants.
I am thinking of a side game, but with a year to ponder....who knows.

Perhaps 2019 might be the year to go with one of your either ideas EB.
That of a number of slightly smaller games than the monsters we have played in recent years?

My fear would be that my dropping out of AVBCW would in those circumstances be seen as manipulation or politicking. That would be bad news. So no, one of my brilliant alternative plans should wait for another time I think.
