"Unit Strength" it is then.
Didn't you say that 3 hits will remove one base though?
Does that mean that unit strength needs to be 18 with each base/element worth 3 strength?
Otherwise you still get into having to use two terms ie. hits and strength which is less intuitive than Strength and bases and just hurts my head.

I'm beginning to wonder about you people.

Your units shoot and melee and take morale tests by reference to their remaining bases. That's quite normal these days, isn't it?

Because between us we have a multitude of unit sizes and figure basing preferences so, regardless of their actual size, we will nominally treat the majority of our units as having the same number of bases. Therefore, all units will have six bases, with the exception of artillery and skirmishers which have their own rules. 'Base' is simply the nomenclature by which we describe the unit's ability to fight.

As the term "base" may cause confusion, we will substitute 'base' with 'strength'. By all means, feel free to secretly ignore the substitution if it helps.

When you are shot at or fight a melee you will suffer 'hits'. There are saving throws against such hits, but when you accumulate three hits you reduce your 'strength' by one.

Imagine how immensely complicated it must have been in the olden days when poor wargamers had to record, not thirds, but twentieths, sometimes even thirty thirds of a casualty!!!! Surely, it must have been impossible.

To avoid any confusion, I’m just going to shoot at maximum effect and take morale at minimum effect every turn. I might even avoid morale all together.

I had had quite enough ale when I wrote that last bit. Reading it back to myself on this sunny Sunday morning, I'm quite impressed......could do with a couple of tweaks but, all in all, not bad.

I shall be staying off the beer for a while.

Yes. They always take the piss. The Ayton weekend is one long piss-take, this is just the preamble, the warm up, so to speak.

However, I shall continue to take it all very seriously because I'm a humourless chap with zero sense of fun.

Oh yes, and another thing. Why haven't you taken up Dave's invitation to write a scenario for the 18thC Sunday game?

I thought you'd be well up for that.

Same goes for all our overseas friends.......we need at least three scenarios for starters.

What happened in the 18th C? It started with a war with France, and ended with a war in France. Our biggest trading partners were India and America at the beginning, and at the end. Seemed like a non event to me. Well, except for the destruction of Poland.
