General Alava, his excellent Spanish liaison officer, mentioned in his memoir that Wellington had virtually no interest in food and that the question 'What would you likefor lunch?' was invariably met with 'Cold meat'. Alava joked that his experience with Wellington left him with a lifelong fear of the phrases 'cold meat' and 'at dawn'.

How do I know such a thing by the way. My father, whose wellingtonics library amounts to a quarter of my books, noticed the discrepancy and the hunted through every first person account of nosey's staff to find corroboratory evidence one way or another. Sadly, he never established a knockout score for either chicken or lamb.
