One of our club members was taken into hospital with a burst appendix a few weeks ago; saw him yesterday and he seems to be bucking your trend of "forgotten within a few weeks" (mind you, he's been watching daytime TV since being released from hospital, so that might explain needing to focus on something marginally less painful than Lorraine Kelly and Jeremy Kyle). He's already been relieved of all Xmas duties (principally getting all the decorations from the loft - he always lets the women of the house put them up) and gift vouchers are likely to replace the need to lift any heavy boxes containing pressies for other people - I did offer to carry his 60 Renaissance dice out to the car for him. I did mention to him that he was the first person I've known to suffer a burst appendix who actually survived; that said, most of them occurred back in the 70s and 80s when medical practices were less advanced. I'm told that appendectomy is now compulsory if you are diagnosed with any abdominal cancer, to avoid mis-diagnosis of subsequent pain.

Funny thing #1 - the above sufferer was running our ECW campaign, and we had only just submitted move 2. Still, ill-wind and all that, he now has loads of time to focus (just a shame that we've now entered the "winter 1642" period and can only move one hex each in the next three months).

Funny thing #2 - he was part of our "Average Joes" competition (FoG:R rules, no superior or elite troops, Italian Wars era) and because he still had two of his five games to play (one of them against me), it was agreed to scratch him from the competition, along with all of his results (which, to be fair, consisted of three massive defeats). Bottom line, his removal and a "bore draw" in the final game yesterday - ironically between the two guys who had had narrow wins against me (11-9 and 13-7) - meant that I am now the holder of the Average Joes Cup. Or will be, once the guy who brought it in to present yesterday has repaired the damage caused when he dropped it in the car park.

Funny thing #3 - I won this competition with an Early Henry VIII army (one of the worst from that period of the FoG:R army lists) borrowed from the appendix guy.

a burst appendix is a very different beast to a straight appendectomy, he is lucky to be alive even now. Sepsis is still a killer.

Yes; being serious, he was telling us yesterday that it was touch-and-go for a while.

It is, mine blew up in the middle of a rain front in the Highlands of PNG, a few days later the pain disappeared and I told the Chopper pilot there was no need to break all the rules to get me out. I was just about to go out to work again when I passed out.

I didn't realise that when it bursts it stops hurting. Fortunately I had a damn fine fieldy who told the pilot he'd kill him if he didn't fly through the rain.

Further nightmare fuel for you..... the “wandering appendix”.
Not everybody’s is in the same place.
Leading to potential misdiagnosis of appendicitis as, say, ulceration or whatnot.
Also has the potential to turn a ‘routine’ appendicectomy into a full-on, get-yer-hands-in-there root around in the contents of your abdominal cavity ‘til they find the damn thing.
Colleague of mine had a particularly elusive one. They pretty much had to hollow him out like a canoe.

Just ordered the new Battle of the Pelennor Fields set for GWs Middle Earth Battles. No slutty dragons but it has a very sexy Fell Beast in it. My old Minas Tirith army is now up for a bit of titivation between shinies.

Nah, those were Fen Beasts. I bet they were wearing mittens in the cold weather. It's hard finding gloves when you have 6 fingers and they're webbed.
