It really is Contrast paint doing the heavy lifting. The new ones they've just released are very good and the single pigment ones in particular are well worth checking out.

In the interests of investigation I thought i'd try and paint a figure only with contrast paints.
So here is a 28mm Victoria Miniatures Spanish Inquisition Inquisitor, painted with 100% contrast.
Time spent was around an hour.

Some more adventures with contrast paint.

Achilles and the boys, a reduced model unit for Trojan Rampant. Just basic contrast paint with no additional highlights. Bronze is a standard gold paint with a contrast glaze over the top.

and some 10mm beasties from Pendraken, 100% contrast, again just basic stuff with no extra highlights etc...
