Nice little piece - I can't recall if it's you or RMD that has Hesse Cassel forces, but it was only after the SYW that their artillery adopted the same blue as the Prussians and Brunswickers for their guns. Up until then, they had had a very natty red and white scheme, involving the wheel spokes and such like.

I've had no luck discovering Brunswick gun-carriage colours either, so was going to go with Prussian-style light blue, as they were already very 'Prussified' and light blue was one of their traditional heraldic colours (I thought I might go with metalwork painted yellow ochre (like Saxon guns), to further match the heraldic colours).

Yes, Hesse-Cassel is believed to have painted its gun-carriages white (or 'grey-white'), with dark red spokes and ironwork. Very pretty!

And before you ask, a surviving Schaumburg-Lippe-Buckeburg 12pdr has a carriage painted white (or 'grey-white') with black metalwork.

I thought they'd probably use some sort of lime wash, both to save money and because it can easily be reapplied, so I went with an off-white for my S-L-B guns. It still looks white ion photos, though.

It could have been Lead White, which would be brighter and rather more hard-wearing. Lead White was extensively used at the time by the Royal Navy, among others, for painting the interiors of its ships, as the bright white helped to illuminate the interior and the lead repelled shipworm.

Good point. I didn't think of lead white as I thought it was significantly more expensive than lime wash- a notion a look at Wiki proved completely wrong. Wouldn't it be nice to transport a WH&S inspector back to 1756?

I had forgotten that the guns accompanying the Brunswickers in the AWI weren't from Brunswick, but from Hesse Hanau - and they were supplied from the Quebec arsenal (tubes) and local forests (wood). But the Prussian-style mid-blue does seem the most likely, given that they copied them in almost every other respect for this era. As far as Napoleonics go, they used Austrian guns in 1809 (so yellow ochre) and captured French/Dutch guns in 1815 (so Gobofvile green).
