All this pike and Shotte talk made me spend an hour diving into my Wagner, European Weapons and Warfare 1618-1648, a most wonderful tome that was much thumbed in the days of my pike and shotting back in the 80's. Which makes me think, nobody has broached the Thirty Years War, a period of much fun frolic and marauding. Just thought I'd throw that into the mix.
To be honest, I was thinking more TYW than ECW, but I didn't want to confuse things. The flags were much prettier in the TYW.
Couldn't agree more about the Wagner book. I have an original and the Warlord reprint. I think it's out of print again (not sure about that thought).

The colour and variety of the Thirty Years War has much to commend itself to the group, lots of marauding mercenaries etc, ravening Croats, treacherous Turks, big hairy Polish men on horses with giant wings, sulky Spaniards, stealthy Swedes, Iniquitous Imperials, hapless Hapsburgs. Or it provides a plethora of possibilities for some Imagi-Nations naughtiness.

Again, I totally agree. You're such a clever fellow.

It’s almost like these GW guys got their inspiration from history.
But yep it is very much like it which is why it fits into my fantasy/ancients and now - possibly- pike and shot grand plan

I suspect I’m on a similar track Simon, but using the ‘Rampant’ model.
Pikeman’s Lament will work with quite large forces, I used a Tudor variant at Partizan with about 10 units a side with no problems and am sure I could double that.
TYW never really interested me, but early Dutch War - yes please

My grand plan allows for interchangeability between Rampant, WAB, WFB, Frostgrave and RPGs so definitely on similar lines ,
