Battle is fun and works. With a bit of tweaking it can do anything form 1930s to 1950 ish.

I had very fond memories of the Bayonet Publications WWII rules. Then I dug them out for a game with Hotel and realised that SEEMS, back in the seventies, must have been playing a very 'in house' version. Great fun then, but a little aged for the present day.

I have a copy of those Bayonet WW2 rules as well - never played them.
I used to play a set at school which I have still have. I copied them and are handwritten in a old school book.
I played them at the Richmond (upon Thames) Wargame club and I think may have been originally written by Bish Iwaszko. The Infantry firing table was later used in the Rapid Fire rules.

BKC is up to version #4 now, having more or less skipped #3. .
After a flurry of emails, I've been instructed by my pals to *not* discount BKC #4.
You use it? It's only available as a PDF? I've looked at what the website says and a review (which describes it as a "micro-armour set"....not the best recommendation for us with our 20mm stuff). So, slight changes only?

Our group did a bit of beta testing - I've got a pre-publication pdf copy somewhere. It's different in a few places but most of the mechanisms are similar. Evolutionary rather than revolutionary. It isn't micro-armour, although of course Pendraken have a large 10mm selection. We use 15mm for it, usually on a 4' X 4' table & fit in a brigade per side or thereabouts, using historical OOB's modified a little to fit into the BKC format.

I had a similar disappointment when I bought a set of rules written for 28mm figures.
I measured mine and some of them were no more than 26mm, so I'm still on the hunt for a set I can use.
People use Rapid Fire with 1/300 so I'm sure BKC4 will be ok for 20mm.

I read the thread title and assumed you’d come to some sort of major life epiphany and now I feel cheated out of gossip

Ohhh! I cut my teeth on Battle. First actual printed wargames rules I ever used. You will need to make templates and stuff.
For fast fun, we played a bit of the 'Airfix Battles' set. Rivet counters may shudder, but BKC were never the rivet counters favourites either.
And I'm looking forward to O group. - My nephew collected a whole load of 15mm WW2 kit, so I may well use that if we get a game up.
