I suspect it depended on the pace of the horse at the time. The faster it was moving, it was probably couched.

My understanding is that, absent stirrups, couched lance tended to pole vault you into the middle of the enemy. Someone in the ancient world was rumoured to use both hands on the lance which must have taken some knee control. The only knee control I have is to fall off when I take my hands on the reins.
The thing about stabbing is that you have to move around on the beast's back, that and a heavy shield would be it for me. Of course, they were probably better horseman.

Very nice indeed. I'm going to look for hints, as I have some Victrix Numidians on the way, (but I cheated and bought LBMS shield transfers as well).
