I also play golf generally regarded as an expensive sport but it’s not I think compared to wargaming. I only buy clubs every few years but I seem to buy figures so often
As Tim says you can’t really put a value on the friendship and other stuff that comes with it though.
Even if just looked at the money aspect- say I spent $50 on figures- even by the time I’ve painted them that $50 has given me more hours of pleasure and time than that amount spent on something else

Another aspect of cost that I’m thinking about now as I ponder the prospect of retirement in a few years is being to continue to afford to buy stuff. I find myself wondering if I should be stockpiling now while I can seem to afford it

The great thing about wargaming is that you can choose how expensive you want it to be .... and it never really gets stupid expensive even if you play GW.
For the the price on one godawfully dull premier league match attendance (tickets, travel, food beer, parking ) you could easily manage two small skirmish forces, a scattering of scenery and an Osprey rulebook and have lots of fun planning, painting playing and commiserating for years.

I think for many, the hobby has been a godsend during the pandemic, and indeed life in general. It provides a retreat from the general insanity of it all

And besides, can you really put a price on spectating the dismantling of the Gateway Cavalry in Grantham in the summer of 2017?

And then there's the 19th Green expenses to consider.

When did you last buy something from them, though?
For that matter, when did anybody you know buy something from them?
I guarantee those guys have 'real' jobs to pay the bills.
I have bought from professional figure painters (when I had a job) - only the best rather than the third world paint factories - and might do so again when my eyesight starts failing. But yes, all 4 of the ones I know have alternative jobs.

Fred as I'ma member of a club I pay a memberships subscription not green fees - The club I play at is a good one, easily in the top 20 in NZ - I pay a monthly direct debit which comes to less than $NZ 1500/year - fr that I play twice / week- occasionally if I play for the team is x3/ week- but I could play as often as I want, every day even. Balls are generally $Nz 90 for 12- these are good quality balls and I rarely lose them. I've had 3 sets of clubs in the past 20 tears
