I prime with either Halfords Matt Black or Gamecolour Matt Black (both very flat black). Just a dusting to avoid obscuring the detail.
Then basecoat with Scalecolour 75 Matt Black Primer mixed with water.
So, everything from a black base. I tend to leave black showing through to define the areas I want to leave visible. It's easy enough to just black line over any errors.
That's interesting. I find some of the Primers give a good surface to paint on but don't 'bind' to the metal that well. Seem to work better on plastic. Does the dusting of Halfords black give a better 'key'?

Yeah, definitely, especially on metal miniatures which is what it was designed for. On plastics I usually wash them before priming to get rid of any release agent. It's a pain but not as much of a pain as having paint flake off later on (which I admit is rare but it sometimes happens).

Some automotive primers are designed for plastics rather than metals, Andy - I assume you check the can beforehand?

I just assumed the Halford's primers were. I'm reasonably sure that I have read somewhere that they are meant for metals.
The important thing I suppose is that I haven't had any problems with them on metals.

No, to be fair, the plastics primers are usually clearly marked as such on the can, but I have picked one up by accident because they had re-arranged their shelves at my local branch.

If you can't get a hold of any of the metal primers I can recommend Colour Force Matt Black Primer which is excellent.
I avoid their matt vanish like the plague as it always seems to frost. I even had a very bad case where the Colour Force Matt Varnish interacted with the gloss (which was supposed to be matt!) underneath and ruined a whole unit. Long story

I use "Hycote" car spray matt black, grey or white on both metal and plastic for undercoat.
It gives a very good surface and paint adheres well.

Never hear of it Willz but I';m guessing that it's similar to Halfords (assuming there are some Halford's shops down under)?
