I've been playing a few non wargamey board games recently........some of them on-line on the Yucata site.
Great fun.........except I keep loosing.
It got me thinking that I'd like a simple wargame/board game/tactical or strategic hex based game.
Any suggestions? I'm not bothered about the period but it must be historical.

How simple?
Memoir 44 is quite easy to learn and worth a go.
I don't play many wargaming boardgames, most of mine are more quirky!
....although I am a sucker for solo wargames that require an extra table just for the pieces
We should play more boardgames at our away days.

Blimey! A sensible answer.
Yes, definitely.
I've played four or five of the games listed and usually I've been able to fine a brief YouTube video by board game enthusiast which explains how to play..........I'd hate to have to pick up a game from the on-line rules.
And most of the games I've played have taken a little over an hour, so a couple of evenings........if you have to make dinner for the wife.
Oh yes, and there's a built in messaging system whereby you can be really rude to your opponent.........you'll enjoy that bit.

I've played M44 and I'm not a fan. I don't mind a simple game, but M44 is just on the wrong side of the line. I did wonder about C&C Ancients, but the money scares me. I think I inherited the Napoleonic version, but I've never actually checked to see if all the blocks are there......and the rules are missing!
I'm sure that an evening playing a game with a glass or two of g&t or port would be most splendid.......provided the energy levels held up.
