extensive and expensive or deep and cheap ?

I really like the rules. Getting repeated double 6's is unlikely but clearly possible. I have heard that some people reduced the number of command dice to make it less likely or otherwise house rule it. I've never found it enough of an issue to worry though.

What CoC does encourage is to think more thoroughly about your command options than you normally tend to in war-games. You tend to think of a plan that doesn't leave you exposed if you don't get the run of dice. Caution, patience and combined arms are usually the order of the day (as WW2 often was). So Purp's crispy fried field run is best done by waiting until you do roll a double 6 and then sprinting in conjunction with suppression fire. Or - instead - outflanking in cover.

I like Bolt Action as well though. I don't subscribe to the view pushed in quite a few wargaming circles that you are only allowed to like one or the other. Bolt Action is more heroic, more in your face and faster moving. It doesn't present the same command challenges though. I'd happily play either.

Agreed with GM. I’ve played equal amounts of both CoC and BA and had great games of both. I prefer CoC, especially combined with all the pint sized campaigns.

Jamanicus and I kick off the Kursk pint sized campaign this weekend. Aim is ease into the weekend with a little taste of CoC and then play a campaign turn of Dux. Two games a weekend. Who can ask for more?

Another portion of CoC coming my way on Saturday, apparently.
Lucky me.

I thought it was your calf muscle you damaged.

Whether or not an inability to run results in more CoC or less CoC depends largely on whether you’re a Viking or a villager.

I suspect I’ll end up being ze Germans on Saturday.
Fun & frolics will doubtless ensue.

Wear your lederhosen. It'll distract - and possibly even disgust - your opponent(s) and the strapping on the calf muscle may earn you sympathy points, and/or will be an interesting talking point in the bar before/during/after.

Never works for me and my Bavarians, but I blame that on my dice.

Which reminds me of a sledge used against a particularly 'prudent' Getman U-boat commander in one our games, who was "all hat and no lederhosen...:
