I’m going to be a bit Emperor’s New Clothes on the subject of ‘use anything you want’ fantasy - I reckon it’s been really well catered-for.
HoTT and Dragon Rampant are the big dogs at the feed bowl... SoB&H & it’s variants, various 2-Hour Wargame sets (covering everything from dungeon crawl to mass battles & fantasy naval rules)AA’s ‘Darkstorme’ & the fantasy variants of ‘USEME’, Hordes & Heroes and Peter Pigs ‘War in the Age of Magic’ all make a point of being playable with any old thing.

I'm back on track now, thanks Buff.
Norman, there is always the lingering fear of a set of fantasy or sci fi rules not allowing your favourite toys that we still find it remarkable when they do.

Tis true although DR can be a bit samey if a war mammoth has exactly the same stats as a giant hedgehog but it is great fun. Of Armies and Hordes looks a bit more varied. Halflings can take giant snails and slugs.
Snails have a better defence value.

I think that’s the challenge for generic fantasy systems - how to make monsters and spells and things interesting and different without forcing a particular world view.

Dragon Rampant is my current regular game as I can use anything I've got. I like it so much I've got some of the figures from the rulebook, page 35, the paladin with the fiery sword, the barbarians and the dire wolf, they're mine. OK I bought them from Dan Mersey,

I combine elements from LR, DR and PL as each has useful categories for fantasy
