That red earth is very typical of the majority of highveld sand. Goes very dry and hard in summer. And burns the shit out of your feet if you walk on it barefoot in the summer sun.

A component of terra rosa is haematite. Terra rosa soils are developed over limestone; their characteristics are low nutrient, shallow bedrock and, like most stress they encourage fruiting. Because they are highly alkaline, they make absolutely magic reds with just a vague hint of sweetness, not from sugar but from high alkalinity.
I have a policy, if I go to a vineyard that claims terra rosa soils over basalt (a red soil nothing like terra rosa) I stay long enough to drive a few customers away and keep my credit card in my pocket.

Has anyone ever seen a sensible or serious post from Grizz before?

That would be a good start, a tad of red for a terra rosa, but you are talking laterites, so just enough terracotta to liven up the leather.
